Cattlemen and women from coast to coast gathered in Eureka, Kansas on the 25th of March to evaluate a set of Brangus and UltraBlack bulls that combined calving ease, performance, carcass merit, maternal excellence and eye appeal into a unique, made for profit package that rivaled the top genetics in the industry. The packed house aggressively procured the offering, as cattle sold from Florida to Oregon and numerous points in between, with the large majority of the bulls landing in the Midwestern states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma & Arkansas.
Leading off the ultra-consistent offering was the first of several Augustus sons to sell, in Lot 165, Suhn’s Augustus 918B3, from Suhn Cattle Company, Eureka, KS. This moderate framed, big topped, huge hipped individual combined breed leading growth and carcass into an eye appealing, right size package, commanding $30,000 for 2/3 interest and full possession to Tony Westbrooks of Bushley Creek Cattle Company to add to his blooming program in Olla, LA. Following him directly in the ring was a half-brother in Lot 35, Suhn’s Augustus 30B3, also from Suhn Cattle Company. With one of the top young donors in the Suhn herd stacked behind him, this moderate framed, three dimensional individual with chart topping growth and carcass projections was selected by Joe Cavender of Cavender Brangus, Troup, Texas, at $25,000 for ½ interest and full possession.
UltraBlack bulls have seen strong demand through previous GENETRUST sales and that certainly proved true at Suhn’s. The third bull in the ring and first UltraBlack came in the form of Lot 16, SF Consensus 535A74, from Schmidt Farms, Texarkana, Texas. This moderate framed, deep ribbed, calving ease prospect with added growth and carcass started a fierce bidding battle that ended in the hands of Joe Cavender of Cavender Brangus at $24,000 to compliment his tremendous bull battery. Following suite in type and kind, Lot 46, SF Mack 75B7, read with a phenomenal 8 traits in the top 25% of the breed or better, including breed leading carcass quality, as well as a tremendous birth to yearling spread. Noted for his completeness, this herd sire, also from Schmidt Farms, was selected by Bill Davis of Chimney Rock Cattle Company, Concord, AR, at $18,000 to headline his UltraBlack program.
At the end of the day, 161 Brangus & UltraBlack bulls grossed a record setting $1,107,251 to average $6877. Volume buyers for the day were repeat customers Paul Young of Austin, Nevada and Clay Barnhouse of Bolivar, Missouri.
